Not Another Camgirl Blog…
Webcam modelling is definitely a 2010s thing. Of course, it’s been around since the days of Jennicam, but it’s really only in the last ten years or so that the top webcam models have begun to gradually displace traditional adult entertainment.
I guess it has a lot to do with internet use becoming a lot more widespread, mobile internet technologies improving astonishingly quickly, and more generally, the emergence of “gig economies” and “hustle economies” — — my inner nerd likes to think of webcam modelling as the inevitable long tail of adult entertainment, with a generous helping of community building mixed in.
Long tail? Yeah, because it creates so many niche marketplaces. Live webcam performances are extremeley win-win, especially when they’re “niche”.
Niche marketplaces are great because they give girls like me the opportunity to get acquainted with people who’re interested in the same things, and enables us to have deep connections and friendships.
The word niche is pretty important — — I feel that camgirls who try to appeal to absolutely everyone tend to have a harder time as webcam models.
Webcam modelling actually incentivizes you for just being yourself, with all your quirks and idiosyncrasies — — I think it’s fair to say that not too many verticals in the entertainment industry reward individual self expression the way webcam modelling does.
Empowerment, you ask? Well, I’m not really all that political, but camming, to me, has always been an avenue to practical female empowerment… empowerment that’s more about being yourself and being accepted for it, instead of bitter, reactionary misandry.
Of course, it’s pretty naive to assume that webcam modelling careers are the easiest thing in the world. It’s a hustle economy, as I mentioned before, so time and energy investment is always the real barometer of success.
I’ve been very lucky, because I love the experience, I love the people I get to connect with, and the opportunities I have to explore a side of myself I used to be hesitant about.
But for camgirls who’ve been wooed into the profession by clickbaity news stories of overnight success, things might geta little bit frustrating — — hustle economies always depend on consistent, high quality service.
Camgirl work also tends to be somewhat low barrier to entry — — it’s easier than ever to start camming these days — — but the work is fundamentally entrepreneurial in nature.
Webcam models operate in a competitive, fluid market, and we’re always going to directly experience the consequences of ups and downs in consumer spending patterns.
There’s a lot to be said about that, and sometimes I do feel that camgirls like me tend to get a reputation based on the successes of outliers (similar to actors or musicians or artists) instead of the daily life and work of the average girl who does webcam modelling from her bedroom.
I guess that’s why I love writing about being a webcam model — — it’s not about being a camgirl evangelist, I’m just fascinated by how the industry has so many angles to it — — empowerment, liberation, the logistics of being a one-person-business, and the ups and downs of working in the webcam modelling industry.
Most importantly, it’s the kind of space that I’ll always be curious and excited to learn more about.
