Working As A Camgirl
Goals, Aspirations and Aesthetic Approaches of A Webcam Model
My starting point for working as a cam girl is I have to be myself. That’s not as easy as it sounds, because to be yourself you have to first understand who you are. To be yourself, you have to first discover yourself. Most people are too internally conflicted to be themselves, especially in front of an audience, in front of a camera. I think people who have never cammed before forget that sometime — most people would freeze if a camera was even pointed in their general direction, so there are many layers and levels to learning to present your most authentic self in front of the camera.
The way I do it is I teach myself to be really present in the moment when I’m camming. I don’t actually “think”, I focus on how I feel, I focus on the experience I want to have with my viewers, and the energy I want to share with them.
Instead of pandering to a certain stereotype, I look for aesthetic variety and an exploration of narrative.
I don’t want the members who watch my content to feel that they’re going to watch me do the same exact thing.
I think that’s what makes performing in this industry so beautiful is that you get to connect with so many different people. I don’t want the regular narratives, I believe that so much of the art form lies in good narrative progression, so I want to make it more like vintage films, or just have it be really emotionally intense.
I’d say my goals for being a webcam model relate to bringing back aesthetic and performance nuances back into the art form. That’s one thing I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, because I’ve always seen erotica as Art — — that’s where I came from, I think of people like Josephine Baker who took something like burlesque and exotic dancing and elevated it to something sublime, or more recently, Dita Von Teese.
The female body is so naturally aesthetically beautiful in its femininity. Being a courtesan, what men would call their “mistresses” in pre-War Paris…it’s something of a lost art. And pornography doesn’t quite cut it, not even close, because it’s too narrow in scope, and too obvious, literal — — it’s the sexual equivalent of fast food.
Perhaps it’s a widespread impatience, dopamine addiction, or just rapidly dwindling attention spans, but long, emotional slow-burn of good erotica seems to be waning in popularity.
However, I’ve never been one of those ‘if you can’t beat them, join them’ people. I will always support art, and I want to bring the beauty of Art, the subtlety and narrative, back into erotica. Why? Perhaps it’s because I want people to realize that there’s so much beauty in erotica: an art form that has been practiced for literally thousands of years. It’s a tragedy that ‘we’re letting it die out just because “fast food” erotica (pornography) is easily accessible on the internet.
In the long run, a part of me definitely wants to take this as far as I can go. Eventually, I would love to start some kind of group or organization where I could help other girls get into webcam modelling, and help guide them and show them what to do and what not to do. Not only to help young cam models succeed professionally, but teach them to appreciate their connection with their audiences, so they realize that it’s not always about the money, it’s also about you as a real person and your contribution to the art form.

In 2020, the increase in popularity of cam model sites and OnlyFans has led to a variety of camming approaches. While some camgirls offer an aesthetic experience that is a functional substitute for pornographic videos, other webcam models use cam live shows as a unique opportunity to showcase and develop their artistic inclinations.
Alice Quine, a university student trained in art, is an example of the latter. Starting her camming work in the summer of 2020, she has consistently worked at developing her own personal aesthetic approach to working as a camgirl — one that is defined by a photographic style inspired by boudoir and glamour photography.
